I understand how it is to be imprisoned by working for someone and/or a company. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for the last 15 years of my life and I just got out. In high school one of my career goals was to become a chef. It was because of my passion for food and the ability to create my own dishes for people. It an artistic expression for me.
After high school I went to a community college where I studied culinary arts as my major so that I would gain the skills to bring me closer to achieving my goal for becoming a chef, and ultimately opening my own restaurant. During my program I worked at a restaurant for a small independent restaurant. It was great for me because I had the benefit of learning directly from the restaurant owner about opening a restaurant and how to run it. He was a nice guy and very knowledgable. He built and sold several companies including a tree trimming Hawaii business. So, I knew I could gain knowledge about the business aspect of opening a restaurant.
Anyway, as he seen my ambition and my talent he made me the head chef within two years.
I was ecstatic! I’ve reached my initial career goal. It was surreal at first. But as years past, the job killed my passion for cooking. Me being the chef, under the owner, I never had the freedom and say over the menu. He would ask me for my opinions on new dishes and what not, but only to be shunned. For him, it was all about numbers and profitability which, don’t get me wrong, I understood. But, I got the gist that he wanted the power and for things to be done his way.
Being in that type of situation takes a serious toll on one’s passion and creativity. Especially, if it’s an artistic out for the person, as it was for me. I can Imagine that this is what happened with Hideo Kojima at Konami. The battles and struggles between what the company wanted to do and what Hideo wanted to do was probably being fought. And being that Hideo was just an “employee” of Konami Corp, there was not much Hideo could do to make the ultimate decisions. That’s where the fallout between Mr. Kojima and Konami pursued.
Hideo probably wanted out to create his own company so that he could produce video games his way whole heartedly. And that’s exactly what he did! He created Kojima Productions.
Being free from the corporate governance I am sure that Hideo will be able to create much more amazing video games that surpasses anything that we’ve seen. It’s because of passion and the art of what he loves to do. Now he can free that…
